Today we commemorate the accomplishments and long term changes in society advanced through the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  changed the worldwide perspective on segregation and civil rights. His leadership was fundamental to the Civil Rights movement’s success as it ended legal segregation of African Americans in the South. Dr. King declared that he wanted nonviolent tactics when marching for the Civil Rights Act . Because of all of his hard work and dedication to end segregation, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Dr. King  came from a middle class family in which they were all raised on southern black Protestant ministry and religion. He had many family members who were preachers at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA; and eventually he followed their footsteps and became a preacher himself at the same church. His segregated childhood was the cause for his desire to change society.  Little did he know what a lasting impact his life would have on all citizens in our country.  His legacy is remembered each year on his birthday which is now a national holiday.
